Why Registrations Open Within 6 Months

Rather than running a superficial online internship, the J&K Digital Scholar Fellowship is a rigorous research endeavor. During this 6-month preparatory period, our editorial team and contributors are completing key foundational infrastructure:

📚

Archival Digitization

Expanding Reviewed OCR transcriptions of primary records, including the 1846 Treaty of Amritsar, Stein's translation of Kalhana's Rajatarangini, and 1890 J&K State Gazetteers.

🗺️

GIS Benchmark Calibration

Cross-verifying Survey of India coordinates and Census 2011 district boundary datasets across all 20 districts to give fellows reliable ground-truth baselines.

🛡️

Multi-Tier Schema Engine

Finalizing automated linting tools that catch factual contradictions, geographic coordinate out-of-bounds, and citation omissions before human editorial review.

Specialized Research Tracks (Cohort 2027)

Fellows choose one specialized track aligned with their academic background, research interests, or competitive examination preparation:

Geospatial & Topography

Track 1: Tourism & GIS Atlas

Research elevation profiles, mountain pass routes (Zojila, Sinthan, Razdan, Margan), climate microclimates, and authentic village coordinates across Jammu & Kashmir's 20 districts.

Primary Sources: Census 2011 (Series 02), Survey of India Toposheets, IMD Jammu & Srinagar Meteorological Station Reports.
Dynastic History & Treaties

Track 2: Dogra Chronicles & History

Document the administrative, judicial, and infrastructural history of the Dogra Princely State (1846–1947), analyzing the Treaty of Amritsar, Sri Ranbir Penal Code, and Cart Road openings.

Primary Sources: Diwan Kirpa Ram's Gulabnama (1876), British National Archives (FO 93/2/1), Imperial Gazetteer of India.
Competitive Exam Syllabus

Track 3: JKSSB / JKPSC Test Engine

Author high-precision, 4-option statutory multiple choice questions grounded in authentic parliamentary acts, eliminating ambiguity for J&K competitive exam aspirants.

Primary Sources: J&K Reorganisation Act 2019 (Act 34 of 2019), The Gazette of India, General Administration Department (GAD) notifications.
Intangible Cultural Heritage

Track 4: Wazwan & GI-Craft Hub

Catalogue traditional production standards, raw material criteria, and counterfeit detection benchmarks for certified GI crafts (Pashmina, Kani, Basohli) and ceremonial 36-course Wazwan.

Primary Sources: Geographical Indications Registry (GI Act 1999), Craft Development Institute (CDI) Srinagar, Directorate of Handicrafts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions regarding the fellowship timeline, structure, and deliverables:

Why will registrations open within 6 months rather than immediately?
We are currently expanding our digitized primary archival corpus (Census 2011 district handbooks, Treaty manuscripts, and Survey of India benchmark maps). Opening registration in 6 months ensures that accepted fellows receive complete source packages, Reviewed rubrics, and structured guidance without delays.
Is there any fee to apply or participate?
No. The fellowship is 100% free with zero fees, charges, or premium tiers. Harshya.in is committed to democratizing Jammu & Kashmir's open-access regional knowledge.
How much daily time commitment is required?
The fellowship is designed as a 15-day sprint requiring approximately 45 to 60 minutes per day. Fellows can work entirely remotely and at their own pace.
Do I need to know computer programming or coding?
No. The program is tailored for researchers, historians, and students. We provide pre-built, easy-to-fill JSON templates and visual web tools. If you can edit a text document and cross-check facts, you can successfully complete the fellowship.
Can students outside Jammu & Kashmir apply?
Yes. Any student, researcher, or scholar interested in Jammu & Kashmir's history, cartography, or culture is eligible to apply, regardless of their geographical location.
What will I actually submit by the end of the sprint?
Each fellow submits: (1) A structured JSON regional research module (e.g. district geography, treaty analysis, or statutory exam question), (2) Primary source citations with page references, (3) A brief academic capstone summary paper, and (4) Daily standup diary notes.
How will my work be Reviewed?
Submissions undergo multi-tier automated validation (checking syntax, required fields, and coordinate/year boundary ranges) followed by editorial review against primary benchmarks (Census 2011, J&K Gazettes, British National Archives).
When and how will certificates be issued?
Upon successful completion of all 15 sprint tasks and editorial verification of your research module, a verifiable Certificate of Completion with a unique cryptographic Roll ID and a formal Letter of Recognition (LOR) will be issued.
How can I prepare during the 6 months before registration opens?
We encourage prospective applicants to explore Harshya's existing regional guides: read our 20 Districts Geography atlas, review the Dogra dynastic timeline, and familiarize themselves with Census 2011 Series 02 publications.
How will I be notified when the application portal goes live?
Enter your email address in the pre-registration notification box above or bookmark this page. You will receive an official notification email the moment the application portal opens.
