The three realms of the crown
Nowhere on earth does the earth shift so violently in character within a hundred miles. South of the Pir Panjal, the Shivaliks fall in gentle red-stone terraces toward the plains of Jammu — land of warrior Dogra maharajas, ancient temple spires, and river fortresses along the Tawi and Chenab.
Climb north through the Jawahar or Navyug tunnels, and the world turns emerald: the oval bowl of the Kashmir Valley, ringed by snowy parapets, laced with mirror-still waters of Dal and Wular, and shaded by century-old oriental plane trees — the regal Chinar.
Cross the high Zoji La or Khardung La into Ladakh, and all vegetation yields to pure geological scale: wind-sculpted granite, cobalt saltwater lakes at 4,350 metres, fluttering lungta prayer flags, and whitewashed Buddhist gompas clinging to vertical crags.
Where the sky meets stone
Pangong Tso stretches 134 kilometres across the high Trans-Himalayan plateau, its crystal saltwater shifting between turquoise, sapphire, and indigo beneath the intense sunlight.
